Vietnam War Elegy – Pastel on mat board – 32″ x 60″ – Detail below
This piece was prompted by my volunteer work with American Combat Veterans of War, or ACVOW, in San Diego at the VA Medical Center. Images were gleaned mainly from the internet with the exception of the area immediately to the left of the names. That is from the battle on Hill 471 when Marines from 1/9 defended it against an NVA battalion and was done from Instamatic prints. The names listed and shown in a detail below were people I knew or were given to me by veterans and fellow volunteers. They were entered with honor and humility.
The angle at top left is roughly the incidence of angle of the Vietnam War Memorial, and the two breaks are meant to represent the panels. Vietnam veterans will recognize some of the images. The area surrounding the image is a black granite like finished Formica representing The Wall. The names were done to simulate the same Optima font.
